Maggots in nursing home residents: A real-life horror story

Most deaths I’ve seen have been more or less peaceful, though the ones that are not stick with you. One guy was silently screaming through his last few hours of life. Another guy reached up and grabbed me when we attempted to lower his bed to turn him. There is a standard of professional care that residents and their families expect nursing homes to meet. Unfortunately, many facilities fall short of this mark in ways that are downright horrifying. So we check back in service with dispatch and head back to base.

I ran up 5 flights of stairs to bring me to the right floor but the wrong side. I had to pass through a massive abandoned ward that was completely pitch black to get to the ward I wanted. I sprinted down a long dark corridor, huffing and puffing I nearly smashed into an elderly lady.

In that instance, a resident had an infestation of maggots in her ear. The resident was a patient in the Alzheimer’s ward. Reportedly, the patient had had her hair washed without the caretaker noticing the infestation. When a nurse finally did notice a three-day-old maggot crawling out of the resident’s ear, the resident went to the emergency room where staff removed 57 maggots.

Not even 3 minutes later, a 17 year old male at the end of the hall started screaming. I ran to his room…he was standing on his bed trying to get away from a white man in a hospital gown. A little less than 2 years later I was talking with a colleague and she came up in conversation. My colleague referred to her as “that crazy bitch” which seemed very out of character for her and it shocked and offended me deeply. I expressed this to her, not so nicely and she looked at me with this shocked look and said “oh dear, do you not know?

Overnight, the medical resident came flying onto the unit declaring something was majorly wrong on the x-ray, and she needed to be assessed and moved to another floor. Ask a nurse about his or her worst patient and they probably won’t tell you much. But give them an anonymous thread on the internet and they’ll spill all their strangest, saddest and funniest stories. We’ve scoured Tumblr and Reddit to bring you the best of the best (or worst?) patients.

’ or ‘Who’s that behind you’ while only you and the patient are in the room. You get used to it, though, and even manage to comfort the patients after a while. I’m not actively involved in the direct care of the residents, but I still interact with them on a daily basis. " really, really loudly. He was, uh, pretty surprised by the procedure, even though the nurse had explained it to him in Spanish."

I finished my shift and left the light on. I left a note with the desk that one of the surgeons had asked me to always leave that light on just in case they had an emergency come in. For the remainder of my shifts, that light had always remained on. Several nights or even that same shift we’re coding or cleaning the patient for the funeral home to pick up. Two of those four patients coded the next day. After the closing, but before they moved, Margaret died in the house.

Although the hospital itself had been on this site for years, the unit was newly renovated, right down to tearing down walls and putting up new ones. I heard the patient’s bathroom door open and again I heard the rattling of the IV pole and shuffling feet. Standing there in the middle of the floor, one hand pushing the IV pole, the other hand on top of the pump on the pole. She stopped walking, turned and waved, nodded her head, said everything was going to be okay, took a few steps, and disappeared. • I recall in a hospital I used to work in, there was a department where the employee’s break room was right next to the elevators. Often during the night shift, nurses would go in during their break to sleep.

Those hands that had soothed and punished her three boys and five girls. Those hands that could no longer take care of her. Gigi started calling me by my mom’s name, by my aunt’s name … sometimes even by her dead sister’s name. Then Gigi couldn’t remember where she lived or if she’d taken her medicine or what year it was.

He said a young nurse in a white uniform was standing quietly in the doorway of the dark bathroom staring at him and it was freaking him out. At this my hair stood on end but I reassured him that he must have been dreaming and checked the bathroom just to be sure. There was nothing there but I will never forget it. I have many shit show nursing home stories but my beats all is walking in on a basically naked CNA. She was in a bra and panties and giant fuzzy slippers.

My unit was shaped like a plus sign (+), with the nurse station at the center. One of the wings was blocked off by double doors because it had been redone as a GI clinic where you would go to get a colonoscopy done and such. On that same med/surg unit on night shift, we heard a loud knocking coming from those double doors as if someone were locked out and trying to get to the nurse’s station. One of my coworkers walked over and saw nobody on the other side of that door, all the lights were turned off. It kept happening, BANG BANG BANG. We even called the security guard up to investigate because we were so spooked, but there was nobody there. She would see the apparition either right after rounding the corner or right after walking out of a room and walking to the next.

There’s the squeak of shoes all night in the Alzheimer’s unit, the random screams, the chairs rocking on their own. There was the room that had three consecutive residents screaming about the murderer killing children. There was the room that would go pitch black occasionally, couldn’t see any light for a minute or two. There was the church lady “prophetess” who routinely let girls know they were pregnant and asked me about people in my life.

monsters whispered to him and told him to hurt people and do awful things.

I too became a cna, and worked a locked down dementia and Alzheimer unit at night. Now, before I had experienced the abnormal happenings in this building, I would have written off his testimony off as idiocy. But he claimed that something held him in that spot as the chandelier started swinging wildly until it started to fall. When it started to fall he was ‘let go’ and allowed to move, and scrambled out of the way before it hit him. Set perfectly so their own weight wouldn’t cause them to shut again. And one wheelchair, at the end of said hallway, facing towards the steps.
